Dec 4-5 Pingyao

Location: Pingyao, China

Pinyao is a historic walled city that is still fully inhabited. We stayed at the historic Yamen Hostel which used to house government officials. Unfortunately the coal smoke from all the houses seemed to get trapped in all the narrow roads contributing even more to our already bad coughs but the city was certainly picturesque.

Tip for hungry travelers, most restaurants inside the walled city are a rip off but there are some cheap noodle and dumpling places near the east and west gates. Our best eating experience was the street food in the new town just outside the west gate. We had a very positive experience at the local police station when we went to inquire about renewing our visas. The officials were very friendly and went out of their way to get us the information we needed. Such an nice change after our experiences in Central Asia!
