Nov. 27- Terra Cotta Army

Location: Xian, China

Since leaving Uzbekistan, we had stayed in touch with Giorgio and Laura, the Italian couple we had first met back in Azerbaijan and then kept running into along the way. While we were in Xian they emailed us that they were headed there too. The day before we had planned to meet up James and I were sitting in our favourite restaurant eating our favourite cold noodle salad when we looked out the window and who just happens to walk past: Giorgio and Laura. What an awesome surprise that was in this big city!

They had come to Xian specifically to see the famous Terra Cotta army and since that was on our to-do list we all went together. Those thousands of clay soldiers and the clay horses were a remarkable sight but somewhat disturbing too. The currently unearthed Terra Cotta army is part of an enormous, 52 square kilometer burial ground for emperor Qin Shi Huang. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with honouring a mighty ruler but I think that employing thousands of people and such enourmous resources for the duration of most of the emperor's lifetime to create this mausoleum for one guy is rather over the top.

None the less, our visit at the site was fascinating!
