Jan. 3- Citrus Paradise

Location: Redlands, California, USA

I had heard that they grow orange trees in California but I did not expect to come across entire plantations of not just oranges but also lemons, yellow and pink grapefruit outside of the Napa Valley. Most people also have several citrus trees in their back yards...I am so jealous!
I was amazed how loaded these trees were with fruit and how beautiful they looked. They were the deciduous version of Christmas trees, lavishly decorated with bright orange and yellow lanterns. Even though we passed thousands of them along our route, I never got tired of looking at them. They looked so happy and made me smile each time I saw one. Bicyclette was less impressed by them because I got so distracted that I hit a few more pot holes than normal. Sorry Bicyclette!

This evening we came past a large plantation and the owner gave us permission to camp among the trees. They not only grew oranges on this farm but also avocados so we bought three for dinner. Wow, I had never eaten tree ripened, local avocados before! So good!!!
