Location: Navoiy to 40 km outside of Samarkand, Uzbekistan
This part of Uzbekistan is very agricultural with the predominant crop seeming to be cotton. There is a lot of controversy around this crop because it first if all consumes way more water than is sustainable (does the Aral sea disaster ring a bell?) and during harvest time the government closes the universities and makes the students join the cotton labour force.
Along the road many people were selling all kinds of fruit abd vegetables. A very enthusiastic lady called us over for a watermelon snack. She even spoke a bit of English and once we had eaten half a melon each, she inisted we take two more along for later. Unfortunately we only just had enough room for one melon.
THANK YOU MASHKXURA FOR THIS REFRESHING SNACK. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU.
In the evening we asked at a farm if we could camp on their property. They immediately invited us inside for dinner and later on insisted we sleep in the spare room. Gulchexra (the older lady in the picture) was quite the character. Very sweet and witty and she spoke remarkably good French. She told us that her name means "rose face" in her language. Very suitable!
After dinner they found an English channel on their TV for us to watch. However, the numerous power outages (about 7 throughout the evening) provided almost more entertainment than the BBC NEWS.
THANK TOU GULCHEXRA AND FAMILY FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE HOSPITALITY.
