In Uzbekistan, couchsurfing, wild camping and staying with locals is illegal. Tourists are expected to get registered at least every third night at a licensed hotel or hostel where you receive a registration slip that you may be asked to show upon leaving the country. Fines may incurr if the police discovers long periods without any registration in your registration slip collection. We hate this rule because we were forced to spend money on accomodation.
On the day we left Beruni we only had one more night before we had to get registered again and there were no licensed hotels for the next ~400km. Not good.
Out of fear of getting busted again like in Azerbaijan, we decided to take a bus from Tortkul to Bukhara. It's very annoying having to take a bus eventhough we have our own two wheels just to satisfy a paranoid president.
