Oct 31- Otmok Pass

Location: Otmok Pass 3326 m, Kyrgyzstan

Despite the foreboding low clouds yesterday it did not snow during the night. This pass was probably the toughest one we have ever done because the grade ranged between 6-9% for most of the way. It was very exhausting with heavy bikes like ours. When we reached the summit a car pulled up and the guys inside came over and shared a celebratory bottle of vodka with us. They were hillarious. It seems to be tradition to get out the vodka upon reaching the top of a pass because the ditch next to the road was full of empty bottles.

The descent was freezing cold despite all the layers we put on. Where our road met the Osh-Bishkek highway we were able to warm up with a 20 cent pot of hot tea in a cozy yurt restaurant. From there towards Osh it was only another 15 km to the top of the second pass but we decided to call it quits for today and ask to camp in the unfinished building just down the hill.
