Jan 16 Goat farm

Location: Florence, Arizona

After the good rest at Dennis and Kyong’s we felt strong and with the help of a good tailwind we made it all the way up to 10 miles outside of Florence. It was a very scenic ride with lots of chollas (those fuzzy looking cactus bushes). Camping just off the road somewhere surrounded by cacti would have been lovely but going too far off road means lots of prickly objects on the ground which could get our bike tires and inflatable sleeping mats into real trouble. So we opted to ask at a farmy looking place if we could just put our tent somewhere on their property. The family was very nice and showed us to a cement pad towards the back of the property. Great! It turned out that this was one of the largest goat farms in Arizona and Holly took me on a quick tour to see all the baby goats. One even had a heart shaped mark on its side. Holly, her brother Luis and his friend Ramon were super nice and took it upon them to be our hosts. They made us a nice fire and kept bringing us food. We roasted hot dogs, drank hot chocolate cooked on the fire and ate some of the many locally grown oranges that Holly’s grandma had an entire box full of. Grandma even gave us a piece of her homemade goat cheese. Yummy! The kids were so cool to hang out with and they were very interested in our travels. We slept very well that night but at one point we heard this horrific screaming and roaring. It sounded like it was along the street somewhere less than 100 meters away from us. At first it sounded like a very insane person on the loose but we then figured it was probably a javelina, a wild boar. Supposedly the dogs are afraid of javelinas, which can be very aggressive and dangerous, and the fact that we did not hear a single dog bark

Thanks Liz, Rene, Holly, Luis and Ramon for letting us camp with your goats J and the food. We had a wonderful evening with you!
