Location: near Wickenburg, Arizona
On these two days we covered the distance from Phoenix to
near Wikieup. They were not very eventful, just riding along, more cacti,
Joshua trees and rocks. On the 20th we could not find a good camping
spot around Wickenburg because all there was to hide behind were scraggly bushes
so we ended up riding until quite late and set up the tent under cover of
darkness only about 50 m away from the highway.
On the 21st we both felt really weak and had no
energy so we did not reach Wikieup before we ran out of water. Normally it
would not have been a problem to ride another 20 miles or so with no water but
we just did not feel so good that day. We came past a sign for a campground so
we turned onto the small road but when we saw that the campground was at the
bottom of this canyon we hesitated to ride all the way down there not knowing
whether there was water available. So we sat down beside the road for a bit and
had a snack. It was a very quiet area but eventually a car came down the road. They
stopped and asked if we needed something and when we asked whether they knew if
there was water at the campground the kind couple did not know but offered to
drive one of us down there with our water bottles to find out. Yes, there was
water! Thanks guys for the help!
With a full water supply we now did not have to push on to
Wikieup so we called it a short day and set up camp under an inviting Palo
Verde tree. It was so good to just get off the bike and sit in the tent and
read.
