June 24-25 Half Way to the Equator and a Town of "Assholes"

We left Lou and Ama's house early in the morning and continued south towards Arco. It was a beautiful ride through a hot, arid desert landscape. Luckily we were able to follow a river for a good portion of the way. The water was wonderfully refreshing.

I normally don't swear but when you are in Challis it is a different story. Even back in Salmon we were warned that Challis has a bad rep. When we arrived in Challis in the evening we stopped at the first gas station we came across (in pic below on left). We filled our water bottles and bought an ice cream while trying to chat with the attendant. She was a somewhat voluminous woman with a sceptical glare. She was friendly but I dont think she smiled while we were there. When we told her that we were cycling thru the area she got this shocked look on her face and then got on warming us about all the "assholes out there. This place is full of assholes! Be careful!"
James and I kindly thanked her for the warning, quickly paid, hurried out the door and broke out in laughter. Her expression was just too priceless. She may be right about the assholes in the area but the whole situation was just too funny. We then sat there next to the Ready Ice cooler trying to not choke on our ice cream while having a seemingly never ending laughter fit. We spotted so many "assholes" around us. There were two fueling up their trucks right infront of us and a few more pulled into the Bowling Alley parking lot across the street. Wow, we have never seen so many "assholes" in one place. Amazing! Oddly enough they looked just like regular people.
Downtown Challis. No "assholes" here as far as I can see. They must have an earlier bed time than normal people. (Okay that is enough swearing for now. I greatly enjoyed it, I hope you did too)
Next morning this is what our view was. Nice, huh? The highway followed a constant grade all the way to Willow Creek Summit. The headwind was strong and super annoying but the scenery sure made up for that.
