July 1- Yufka bread production

There was a mosque right outside the window so it was a bit of a rough awakening when the call of prayer suddenly started booming through the open window at 5am. We were able to go back to sleep though and sleep in a bit.
Ali's mom and sister made yufka bread this morning. Yufka are like super thin, very large wraps. They are used to make a certain type of Turkish Börek by filling them with cheese and sometimes herbs. Often during a meal, shreds of  Yufka are used to pick up food (like the Ethiopian Injera) and dip in yogurt and soup.

In the afternoon Ali drove us, his mom, sister and her kids to Laodikea, another historic church site. It was beautiful, not as pompous as Ephesus but it is situated on top of a hill with a nice view. Lots of restoration work was being done when we were there so I think this site will be quite amazing in a few years.

Then instead of heading straight home, Ali started driving up the mountain side. Where are we going? You will see.

He parked in a little mountain side town called Baskarci. The air was remarkably cool up here. Then Ali announced that we came up here to eat snow!
Normally a comment like that would have made me question our host's sanity but I recalled him telling us earlier about a cafe which gathers heaps of snow in the winter and stores it in a cool place for many months in order to serve scoops of snow with either grape or cherry sirup poured top. It was so delicious and I am so going to do that once we are back home.
