June 7-11- Istanbul -Aya Sofia and Blue Mosque

Simit (Sesame covered pretzel like rings) vendors and corn on the cob stands are a common sight all around Istanbul.
The Aya Sofia and Blue Mosque are the two famous icons of Istanbul. Originally, the Aya Sofia was a Christian church (I think Byzantine) which was later transformed into a mosque and now operates as a museum. Unfortunately, the line ups were so long we lost all intrest to go inside.

The Blue Mosque is a massive, still fully functioning mosque. We did not go inside that one either because we did not realize the mosque closed for visitors during prayer time. We got there an hour before having to catch a ferry out of Istanbul and yes, prayer time just started. So out of fear of missing the ferry, we did not get a look inside the Blue Mosque. If only we had known that the ferry was going to be an hour delayed!! C'est la vie.
However, I got some lovely pics with my good camera inside the Yeni Mosque near the spice bazaar by the Galata bridge. Unfortunately I dont have a computer to upload them with. Hopefully at a later date but the decorations inside mosques are just lovely. A quick google search should give you a good impression of what I mean.

The mostly black image was taken down in the Yerebatan cisterns. Again, the good pics are on the large cameras. My smart phone camera just cannot handle low light conditions. For now, you can also google Yerebatan cisterns for better images.
