Aphrodisias used to be a Greek town centered around the temple of Aphrodite. Probably my favorite part was the museum with all the salvaged sculptures from the destroyed temple. DaVinci and Michelangelo certainly are two big names in the world of sculptures but since visiting the Aphrodisias museum I have the feeling that there were many other names that never received their fair share of recognition. Standing in front of some of these more than life size marble statues and carvings of attractive ladies draped in several layers of linen, intimidating officials and beautiful, violent and romantic scenes from Greek mythology, is awe inspiring. What skill!
270 m long stadium. Can seat 30,000 spectators. Used for athletic events.
The temple gateway.
A fancy sarcopagus.
A Greek message. I dont think it is a tomb stone.
