As much as we dislike the heat and humidity along the coast, we decided to tough it out for a few more days and head south from Selçuk to Didim to view more Roman ruins along the way. My big hope was to photograph the Medusa sculpture by the Apollo Temple in Didim.
By the time we got to Söke it was hot and muggy and we were desperate for a cool place to rest. Then we saw a McDonalds sign. Never before were we so glad to see a McDonalds. It was beautifully airconditioned and when we asked if we could just sit here for a few hours to cool off, the staff said that was no problem. One of the girls was especially nice and after a while she brought us two cups of coffee free of charge. Wow! Before we left, she even filled our water bottles with cold water and gave us two large cups full of ice cubes.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, YELIZ. IT WAS SO NICE TO MEET YOU!
After leaving the McDonalds, we realized it was still too hot to ride so we sat down on a shaded bench, stuffed our collars with ice cubes and waited for the sun to drop closer to the horizon.
Finally left town around 6 and kept riding towards Didim. Due to a complete lack of good camping spots we ended up riding all the way to Miletos. It is another old Roman ruin, the main remain being the theatre. It was twilight when we got there, tired and sticky with salty sweat. Gross.
There were many bushes we could have hidden in but we decided to ask the overnight guard for permission. We asked God to have the man be friendly a friendly one. To our surprise he waved us over and pointed to an open patio area where we could put our tent before we even asked him if we could camp here. He even said we are welcome to explore the ruins free of charge. Cool!
God is so great! We not only got a camping spot but we did not even have to ask the guy plus we got free admission to the Miletos theatre ( and I found a well with a hose for a refreshing shower once it was dark). THANK YOU LORD FOR BEING SUCH A GOOD TOUR GUIDE!
Our camping spot was pretty awesome because we were only about 100m away from the base of the theatre. This theater must have been gorgeous when it was new!
